Fawning Fox News pundits pushed Trump towards a North Korea failure

But if he refrains, Kim may have already earned enough goodwill among his neighbours - especially China, his country's main trading partner - to see some softening of the economic sanctions against his isolated nation, without agreeing to give up his nuclear arsenal.

Earlier in the week, North Korea, apparently convinced that Trump is preoccupied with winning a Nobel Peace Prize, goaded him by suggesting he would "be recorded as a more tragic and unsuccessful president than his predecessors, far from his initial ambition to make unprecedented success".

"Trump walking away from the summit lets North Korea meet all its objectives: public recognition, lighter sanctions, damage to United States alliances and continued nuclear advancement", said Adam Mount, a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington.

Taking to social media Trump wrote: "I have chose to terminate the planned Summit in Singapore on June 12th". Now he is likely to be damaged politically if the talks are entirely derailed.

If Kim decides on a more aggressive response to Trump's move, he could test one of his short- or mid-range missiles, something North Korea has refrained from doing in recent months while pursuing diplomatic outreach, analysts said. "At home, they will face a gleeful political opposition who will ridicule them for being so naive". Further complicating matters, advisors within the White House seemed split on how to handle Kim, and the United States president insists in general on ignoring diplomatic experts.

"There was some talk about the Libya model last week, and you know, as the president made clear, you know, this will only end like the Libya model ended if Kim Jong Un doesn't make a deal", Pence told Fox News. We have to remember why Kim comes to the meeting.

Additionally, the official said North Korea has ignored communications from Washington.

"It is in Xi's interest not only to delay but to have the summit pending for as long as possible", said James Mann, author of The China Fantasy.

Plans for Liverpool victory parade should they win the Champions League final
The legendary shot-stopper has won dozens of trophies at domestic and worldwide level but only Champions League trophy eludes him. Liverpool last won the Champions League in 2005, though they went on to reach the final again two years later.

Kim Kye Gwan, a top official at North Korea's Foreign Ministry, said in comments published Friday by the country's state-run news agency KCNA that Trump's decision runs counter to the global community's wishes for peace on the Korean Peninsula. "The cancellation may offer China an opportunity to do something to salvage the aborted meeting", he said.

Andrea Berger, an expert on North Korea's weapons program at Middlebury Institute of International Studies, said the letter's language is "cringe-worthy".

Mr Trump's letter to Mr Kim cancelling the summit was an example of the United States president's unconventional approach to diplomacy, reading more like a break-up letter than a formal memo between two nuclear adversaries.

Moon met Trump in Washington on Tuesday, but appeared caught unawares by the president's decision Thursday. "I can't say that I'm happy about it".

But that's over now, and it's increasingly looking like Trump was played like a fool by a leader who realised that he was incredibly susceptible to being buttered up. "The North Koreans did not tell us anything - they simply stood us up", said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Chinese analysts say China has much to gain from a peace deal that would prevent a potentially disastrous conflict with the United States on its border, and that in the long run might result in the removal of USA troops from South Korea.

The change in tone from the North, referencing a nuclear showdown, and the military exercise rhetoric indicated that something was changing.

A flurry of characteristically combative statements from North Korea - branding Vice President Mike Pence as a "political dummy" and threatening nuclear confrontation with the USA - made plain that the North was not willing to relinquish its nukes in short order as key Trump advisers like national security adviser John Bolton were demanding.
