The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least nine Russian and 26 Syrian troops were killed during the attack.

The number of rebel casualties could not immediately be confirmed, but an independent monitor claimed the casualty rate among Russian and Syrian fighters appeared to be higher than the Kremlin has reported.

The deadliest was on Wednesday, when IS focused a bunch of Syrian and allied Russian fighters close to the city of Mayadeen within the japanese province of Deir Ezzor.

At least four Russian combatants have been killed by militants in the eastern Syrian province of Deir al-Zour.

On October 3, 2017, Russia's Defense Ministry denied that two Russian soldiers had been captured by the Daesh Takfiri terrorists in Syria.

A war monitoring group however, has put the death toll of Russian forces at nine. All 26 Syrians killed were claimed to be Syrian military forces according to the statement.

In Syria, the militants killed four Russian soldiers who came under attack in the province of Deir ez-Zor.

Forty-three of the attacking militants were killed and six vehicles were destroyed, the ministry said.

Syria, which has been locked in a devastating civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Two have been navy advisers supporting Syrian artillery operations and died instantly, and one other two died of their wounds in a Russian-operated navy hospital in Syria.

The Russian ministry said the dead were military advisers attached to a Syrian army unit in the Deir ez-Zor.

The Russian military is backing Syria's army with air strikes and troops, but there are also widespread reports of private Russian mercenaries on the ground.
