Israeli PM Praises Pompeo's Iran Speech as 'Policy That Can Guarantee Security'

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks of the new Iran deal

Pompeo, who was Central Intelligence Agency chief until he was confirmed as secretary of state on April 26, said in a speech on Monday that the USA will apply economic and military pressure against Iran and will impose "the strongest sanctions in history" on the Islamic Republic.

The speech did not explicitly call for regime change but Pompeo repeatedly urged the Iranian people not to put up with their leaders, including President Hassan Rouhani and foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu applauded US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's speech on Monday outlining the 12 steps Iran must take for sanctions relief, saying this is "the right policy".

Pompeo said Iran will continue to feel the "sting of sanctions" if its doesn't change the "unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen". While past USA presidents sanctioned Iran for a variety of bad behavior - ranging from its sponsorship of terrorism to its human rights abuses - Obama by his second term offered to lift the most biting ones in exchange for nuclear concessions.

Pompeo said if Iran made major changes, the U.S. was prepared to ease sanctions, re-establish full diplomatic and commercial relations and support the country's re-integration into the worldwide economic system.

Other demands the Iranians are unlikely to go along with include stopping uranium enrichment and ballistic missile tests, and allowing global inspectors access to all sites, including military locations where critics suspect clandestine research.

"We will ensure freedom of navigation on the waters in the region".

That said, Pompeo's expectation about Iran's treatment of its own people was not included in his list of 12 demands of the Iranian regime if they wish to rejoin the worldwide community. The Islamic Republic "will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East".

The spat comes after several European companies expressed concern about continuing business with Iran following the United States exit, raising further doubts about the viability of the deal. The thing is, some of the other six countries involved in this are making billions through trade with Iran, and for that reason and others, want to keep their part of the deal intact.

The Trump administration has hardened its approach to Tehran threatening severe economic sanctions if they do no stop their nuclear program and also withdraw from the Syrian civil war.

"The list of requirements of the Iranians asks for everything but conversion to Christianity and reads more like a demand for unconditional surrender than an actual attempt at negotiation", said Jeremy Shapiro, research director at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Mr Pompeo had not demonstrated in his speech how abandoning the deal made the region safer from the threat of nuclear proliferation.

About the proposal for a treaty rather than an agreement, Pompeo said, "A treaty would be our preferred way to go".

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) saw Iran agree to limit the size of its stockpile of enriched uranium - which is used to make reactor fuel but also nuclear weapons - for 15 years and the number of centrifuges installed to enrich uranium for 10 years.

"President Trump has taken a firm position, which we welcome, against Iran". Ponder how North Koreans recently released three American prisoners as a prelude to talks while the Iranians released no American prisoners until Obama provided a ransom that he and confused supporters said was not a ransom.

"He will not live forever, nor will the Iranian people abide the rigid rule of tyrants forever", Pompeo said. "Over the coming weeks, we will send teams of specialists to countries around the world to further explain the Administration's policy, discuss the implications of sanctions re-imposition, and hear your concerns".
