Memorial Day Travelers Met with High Gas Prices

Memorial Day weekend gas prices have climbed to their highest point in four years leading into this year's holiday, according to AAA. AAA Carolinas predicts more than 1.2 million North Carolinians will travel this Memorial Day weekend, with more than 1.1 million driving to their destinations.

If you are driving somewhere, experts say the sooner you leave, the better.

The national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline, which now stands at $2.96, has jumped 19 cents over the last month.

Gone are the days of $2-a-gallon gasoline. The highest recorded average price per gallon in greater Chicago was $4.51 in 2012; the record for Chicago was $4.68 that same year, AAA figures show.

"We just go with the flow and go with the gas prices and go on", said Miller.

In 2014, there were 9,967 fatalities in crashes involving a driver with a BAC of.08 or higher, accounting for 31 percent of total traffic fatalities for the year, according to AAA.

The report says the worst time for people to travel in Los Angeles will be Friday, May 25 between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

In fact, OPEC and Russia's moves have been strong enough to offset soaring production from the shale revolution in the United States. Other analysts believe the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal will also reduce supply.

"Besides the pull of demand on prices in the summer, refiners have to replace cheaper blending components with more expensive ones in order to meet environmental regulations", Judith Dwarkin, chief economist at RS Energy Group, said in an email.

The Transportation Security Administration said it expects this weekend will set the stage for a record-breaking summer travel season, with 243 million passengers and crew projected to pass through security checkpoints nationwide between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In Onslow County, prices are slightly higher, averaging at $2.79/g.

If prices don't calm down, some drivers could decide to stay home rather than pay up at the pump.
