The Eighth Amendment was passed in Ireland in 1983, with upwards of 67 percent voter-approval. "The result appears to be resounding.in favour of repealing the 8th Amendment" constitutional ban on abortion, Mr. Varadkar told journalists in Dublin.

Irish voters have overwhelmingly cast their ballots in favor of repealing a constitutional amendment banning abortion.

Abortion will not immediately be available to women within Ireland.

During the press conference that announced the result, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that "I said in recent days that this was a once in a generation vote". I'd be surprised if we haven't undergone the same sort of change there.

After the "Yes" vote is confirmed in official results, the eighth amendment of Ireland's constitution will be repealed.

But he said the vote must be respected.

The women and equalities minister said it was a "historic" day for Ireland and a "hopeful one" for Northern Ireland.

Not far from the polling station, a more somber atmosphere was felt at the mural of Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old woman who died in 2012 from a septic miscarriage in Galway after being denied an abortion.

"It is inevitable that the abortion industry based in Great Britain will set up clinics in border towns", he said. They have achieved what has always been the norm in other European countries: giving women the right to decide for themselves whether they feel capable of having a child or not.

The 8th Amendment effectively bans abortions, and now, terminations are only allowed when a woman's life is at risk.

The removal of the Eighth will make it easier for women from Northern Ireland to access abortions, as they will no longer have to travel to mainland UK. "I don't think you'll find many people on our side of the referendum who don't accept the result".

Although the referendum was repealed, abortion won't automatically become legal in Ireland.

The government proposes that women be allowed to terminate pregnancies in the first 12 weeks.

Abortions are now only legal in Northern Ireland if the life or mental health of the mother is at risk. "And they are going to change now", a tearful Mellet said at the Royal Dublin Society, where the count took place throughout the day.

While politicians around the world who had supported the change were quick to congratulate Ireland. He said that majority reigned among both men and women, nearly all age groups and social classes, and perhaps every constituency in the country.

Katherine Zappone said Saturday she is confident new abortion legislation can be approved by parliament and put in place before the end of the year.

There were roars of approval Saturday when two women leaders of the Sinn Fein party raised a sign that read, "The North is next".

"While other Western nations including the United States acquiesced to the extreme abortion lobby, Ireland has been a shining beacon of hope for its strong defense of unborn children and their mothers", Dannenfelser continued, adding that "we are filled with sorrow at this outcome".
