New Braunfels also saw the fifth-largest percentage population growth in the nation since 2010, joining three other suburban Texas cities (Cedar Park, McKinney, and Frisco) in the top five for population growth over almost a decade. During the same period, Phoenix's Maricopa County attracted more than 39,000 new residents and San Antonio's Bexar County added 10,000.

Greetings from Texas! Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau found seven of the nation's fastest growing cities are in Texas.

The analysis was for cities of more than 50,000.

Texas cities dominated the list of those gaining the most population from 2016 to 2017. There Jacksonville ranks 12th, just behind Dallas, San Jose, Calif., and Austin, and just ahead of San Francisco, Columbus and Fort Worth.

The report charts growth from population estimates between July 2016 and July 2017. In every year since the last census count, the bureau has estimated at least some incremental growth for the state. Similarly, Los Angeles, Seattle, Charlotte, N.C., Columbus, Ohio and Atlanta, had large influxes of people without making a significant impact on the broader population. A year ago it grew by more than a third of its population, making it the fastest-growing city, town or village in Florida. Federal Way was the only city to lose population, showing a tiny decline of 0.1 percent.

Blair said city officials looked at the building and demolition permits for multifamily and single-family homes since 2010 and came up with its own estimate of about 25,800 people living in town.

Officials from the state reportedly pitched locations in Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun counties to Apple people. North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore did not respond to a request for comment.

Of the five largest cities - which in order are New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Phoenix - only Chicago saw a population drop, according to census figures.

Madras grew to an estimated 6,839 residents, while Culver topped the 1,500 mark, with an estimated population of 1,508 residents, and Metolius grew by 22 people, to a population estimate of 773. Excluding Seattle, the county grew by just about 15,000 people a year ago, for a growth rate of 1 percent.

"It's gone up and down a bit, but that's where we're headed", Frey said.

The 14 largest cities in the country didn't change from the prior year. On the list of 15 cities nationwide with the most population growth, Dallas' increase of 18,935 people put it at No. 3, and Fort Worth was No. 4, with an increase of 18,664. "Increasingly in the suburbs, the population is aging", he said.

The growth in North Texas went beyond the urban core. Frisco in Collin County took the No. 9 spot.
