The Washington Post: "White House to convene GOP lawmakers to review classified information on FBI source" - "The White House and the Justice Department have put off a high-stakes confrontation over the FBI's use of a confidential source to aid an investigation into the Trump campaign, after top law enforcement and intelligence officials met with President Trump on Monday to discuss the brewing controversy".

The meeting, which was not on the White House's public schedule, occurred the day after Trump demanded an investigation over a government informant's meeting with several people connected with his campaign in 2016.

No one from the White House is scheduled to be present, Sanders said - nor, at this point, are any senators or any Democrats, in defiance of a request from the Senate minority leader.

The president has been on offense against Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation following press reports that described the use of a confidential informant by investigators as they looked into Russian agents' overtures to Trump campaign aides in 2016.

Comey's firing and Flynn's hasty departure - he only served 24 days in the job and quit after reports surfaced that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of his communications with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the US - led to questions about whether Trump hampered the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election.

"It's clear that they're only taking the position of the FBI on this and the Democratic Party... which is that Trump is trying to block the investigation into his alleged collusion with Russia", Lauria told show hosts Brian Becker and John Kiriakou.

Sanders said that no Democrats were attending the meeting because they did not ask to attend.

Trump and Vice President Pence's re-election campaign alluded to their pressure on the Justice Department in a fundraising email on Monday: "This could be the greatest political scandal in American history", the campaign wrote to supporters.

Democrats, however, have maintained the independence of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation should remain unimpeded.

Ehrenreich said it was "awesome" to see Ford, and added: "It's just such a huge deal to have him really genuinely enjoy the film". Ellen also asked Glover and Ehrenreich what their first impressions of each other were.

During a meeting Monday with Trump, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray also reiterated an announcement late Sunday that the Justice Department's inspector general will expand an existing investigation into the Russian Federation probe by examining whether there was any improper politically motivated surveillance.

Since the investigation began, Mueller has built a criminal case against Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort while former Trump deputy Rick Gates struck a plea deal in March in addition to agreeing to testify.

Prof Stefan Halper, 73, has emerged as a key figure in a battle playing out between Donald Trump and his own justice department.

One outcome was an acknowledgment by the Justice Department that its IG, Horowitz, will expand an inquiry he was already conducting into the ongoing Russian Federation investigation to include its use of sources and surveillance.

Grassley said he wants emails, phone records, notes and other materials by Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr related to the former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, who wrote the dossier. Rosenstein put out a statement saying, "If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action", and referred the matter to the Office of Inspector General.

Either way, Trump appears to have accomplished what he wanted from this dust-up.

Caputo added: "I know because they came at me".

In the 1960s, it was NY mobster Joe Valachi who peeled back the inner workings of the crime families who employed him. Comey later testified to Congress that internal reviews found no information to support the president's tweets. And last month, the president tweeted about "the Fake & Corrupt Russia Investigation", writing, "Mueller is most conflicted of all (except Rosenstein)".
