Amazon Premier League rights

Premier League football will be shown on Amazon between 2019/22 after picking up one of the two remaining broadcast packages.

BT has bought the other remaining rights package, paying £90m per year for exclusive live coverage of 20 midweek Premier League games each season.

"With Amazon's rival, this could well be the last time that both BT and Sky own the live Premier League rights in the United Kingdom, with Richard Scudamore keen to attract more online players to the table".

Sky Sports paid £3.58 billion ($4.8 billion) for 128 matches a season in February, while BT has the rights to 52 games.

Meanwhile, Sky has signed up four of the seven packages, meaning that the 21st Century Fox-backed broadcaster will show more games than ever before in the three years from 2019.

Take a look through the gallery to reveal some of the angry reactions to Amazon acquiring Premier League football rights.

The rights include one round of midweek games and one round on a bank holiday in December.

After the past two domestic deals both produced 70 per cent jumps in the value of rights, the league is now experiencing a downturn and looking to generate more revenue overseas where all 380 games are available live each season.

You will need a Prime membership, which costs £79 a year or £7.99 a month. Amazon also has highlights rights.

Separately, the Premier League clubs have agreed a new formula for sharing any future increase in global broadcast revenue from season 2019/20 onwards.

"But we should not forget that Sky is still the dominant provider and the home of Premier League football".

The bix six clubs - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham - managed to get the necessary 14 votes out of the 20 to agree that from 2019/20, any increase in the current worldwide rights package, will be distributed according to league position and not equally distributed between all 20 clubs as it has been up to now. From 2019-20, the start of the next three-year rights cycle, any increase in the current global rights package, which is inevitable, will be distributed according to league position.

Under the new formula, the maximum a club can receive is 1.8 times the amount received by the lowest-earning club, the Premier League said in a statement.

Recent days have seen claims that BT Sport and Amazon had taken one each of the previously unsold pair of deals, that has now been confirmed.

The deal is an important milestone for Amazon, but it represents only a fraction of the larger Premier League pie. However, the entire auction has fallen short of the Premier League's hopes on revenue.
