Apple takes on the Kremlin approves new update for Telegram

He went on to allege that Apple had "prevented" updates to the Telegram app on a global basis after Russian officials ordered the platform removed from Tim Cook's walled garden.

It also requested Apple no longer make the app available for download in Russian Federation.

The Telegram CEO says that the inability to roll out updates to its app means that the company has been unable to comply with new privacy laws in Europe.

Apple has one month from May 28 to remove Telegram from the App Store in Russian Federation. It has, at time of writing, been two months since the last update in the app store (version 4.8.1).

Apple is looking to expand its digital advertising business by showing ads for the App Store within third-party apps, according to reports.

In April, Telegram was banned in Russia after the company refused to hand over encryption keys to the Russian government. We are continuing our efforts to resolve the situation and will keep you updated.

But Telegram has 200 million global users, and is ranked as the world's ninth most popular mobile messaging service.

This comes after Roskomnadzor-Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media-ordered a block of the messaging app in the country in April.

Surprisingly, and maybe because of how popular the resistance was proving to be, it looked like several of the key cloud hosting companies, such as Google and Amazon's AWS, where Telegram along with many other sites and apps host their data and operations, had made a decision to hold firm to see how things would develop, even when their own consumer-facing services were suffering.
