American colleges have dominated again in the latest global university rankings with eight USA institutions coming in the top 10.

Cambridge and Oxford come fourth and fifth in the list respectively, but the number of United Kingdom institutions in the top 100 has dropped from 10 a year ago.

"To be judged among the top 100 most powerful university brands is a great source of pride for everyone at Hebrew University and for Israel as a whole", said HU President Asher Cohen.

University College London dropped to 18th spot, down from 16 previous year, while the Imperial College London dropped down to 20 from 18 in 2017.

Administered by Elsevier, the survey “targets experienced, published scholars, who offer their views on excellence in research and teaching within their disciplines and at institutions with which they are familiar”.

UCLA made the top ten for the first time since 2014 after jumping four places in the standings.

Top American colleges 'earned their reputations over the whole 20th century and beyond and have not slipped in standard, so they are hard to displace, ' said analyst Simon Marginson. It has six universities in the top 100 - the same number as past year - but three of those have fallen from their 2017 standings.

THE's editorial director of global rankings Phil Baty said: "The UK has some of the most prestigious universities in the world, admired across the continents".

The top five ranked universities are Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford, Cambridge, and Oxford.

Baty said: “All UK universities have either fallen down the global pecking order this year or stayed static.

Australia retains three top 100 institutions, although two have dropped slightly. The institute was clubbed in the same group in 2011 and since then has been out of the top 100 list.

The latest QS World University Rankings placed Tsinghua University and Peking University in 25th and 38th places respectively.

"Particularly worrying is the decline of all London universities in this list".

China has its own Academic Ranking of World Universities, launched in 2003.

The ranking is compiled from a globally representative survey of 10,000 senior academics on the most renowned institutions.
