Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid and Monaco have reached a "preliminary agreement" over the transfer of Thomas Lemar, the Spanish club have announced.

But rather than stating where he will be playing next season, Griezmann will only announce if he's staying or leaving Atletico Madrid.

He's now preparing for the World Cup with France but given how far along the Liverpool transfer was, there's every chance his head is still on Merseyside.

A statement on Atletico's website confirmed the clubs will work over the next few days to complete the transfer.

Arsene Wenger was reportedly targeting Lemar to be the replacement for Alexis Sanchez last summer transfer window deadline day as the Gunners were working on shipping Sanchez out to Manchester City.

Having previously stated that he would announce his decision before France's opening World Cup game on Saturday, Griezmann chose to keep quiet. But we still have time to correct mistakes.

Griezmann's intention is to make an announcement where he will explain his decision and the motives behind it.

It is the second successive summer that Griezmann has been the subject of speculation over a big-money switch away from the Rojiblancos.

Lemar played a key role for Leonardo Jardim's young side as they ended Paris Saint-Germain's dominance by claiming the Ligue 1 title in impressive fashion in 2016-17.

Lemar, 22, has become a regular fixture in the France national team squad since making his worldwide debut in 2016.
