Notes, photographs and flowers are left in memory of Anthony Bourdain at the closed location of Brasserie Les Halles.

His best-selling 2000 book "Kitchen Confidential" introduced readers to the workers toiling anonymously behind the scenes in American restaurants, many of whom are Spanish-speaking immigrants.

A prosecutor in eastern France said Bourdain apparently hanged himself in a luxury hotel in the ancient village of Kaysersberg on the Alsatian wine route.

Julio Peterson said he would see Bourdain around the neighborhood. "Rest in peace, Tony, and the most honest condolences to Tony's beloved family", Wang ended the Facebook post.

Celebrity British chef Gordon Ramsay - a fixture on television with his reality show competitions - said he was "stunned and saddened". He was an outspoken critic of President Trump's immigration policies and a fierce defender of Hispanic workers.

He faces a maximum sentence of five years confinement, forfeiture of all pay and dishonourable discharge for his desertion. It is unknown whether family had been in contact with Hughes or knew of his whereabouts following his 1983 disappearance.

Zimmern says that when he and Bourdain met up, they would talk about "wanting to get off this insane roller coaster, but at the same time knowing that this was our work", he told The New York Times. "You've been through so much", McGowan said. This was also just days after Bourdain bought a moody painting with the ominous title "The world is falling down, I am learning to live with it". He was on location shooting an episode of his award-winning food and travel show, Parts Unknown. "My heart pours out for his family and loved ones", wrote New Yorker food correspondent Helen Rosner, a friend of Bourdain's.

He wrote of the difficulty of long hours, hard work and poor pay, and said that one of the side benefits of his success was the ability to pay the rent.

Ruth Carhuff recalled Bourdain's interview with Iranian-American journalist Jason Rezaian on "Parts Unknown". He liked that Bourdain went to smaller villages and wasn't afraid to sit on the floor and eat, sampling traditional dishes such as tamales with mole negro sauce wrapped in banana leaves instead of corn husks. "He was always pleasant", Peterson said.

Occasionally, Bourdain's penchant to spotlight minorities attracted a backlash. "In the beginning of their relationship, Anthony told a mutual friend, 'He's never met anyone who wanted to die more than him.' And through a lot of this previous year, Asia did want the pain to stop", McGowan says. Bourdain responded on Twitter, calling it "shameful, dishonest race-baiting click bait".

Wang says after Bourdain's visit, they were able to give more opportunities to their employees and make their menu even better.
