Chandimal pleads not guilty to 'sweet in pocket' ball tampering: ICC

Sri Lanka cricket captain Dinesh Chandimal has been charged with breaching the International Cricket Council Code of Conduct in the fallout of the ball-tampering controversy in the second Test against the West Indies.

The charge constitutes a breach under Article 2.2.9 of the ICC's code of conduct, which deals with altering the condition of the ball by "unfair" means.

The Lankan players refused to come out on the field after the umpire Aleem Dar and Ian Gould changed the ball after finding them guilty of trying to shine the ball in an illegal manner.

Their players protested the charge and the subsequent penalty of a ball change and the award of five extra runs to the opposition by refusing to take the field at the start of the third day's play.

Play started two hours later in St Lucia, following lengthy discussions between match referee Javagal Srinath and Sri Lanka's coaching staff.

After initially appearing to be prepared to resume the match, the Sri Lankan cricketers then hesitated even as they were making their way out to the middle.

Sri Lanka agreed to keep playing the second Test against West Indies on Saturday "under protest" after getting caught up in a ball-tampering row.

But Torreira should become Arsenal's second summer signing after veteran full back Stephan Lichtsteiner joined on a free. Torreira - now on World Cup duty with Uruguay - has agreed personal terms and is expected to undergo a medical soon.

Earlier in the day, Chandimal was charged by the worldwide cricket body in the aftermath of the high-voltage drama that took place during the third day of the Test.

In a pre-emptive move on Saturday evening, Sri Lanka Cricket issued a media release saying it would defend any "unwarranted allegation" against any player.

The video evidence will be used in the hearing which will also be attended by the match officials as well as the Sri Lankan team management. So maybe Gould was just being over-cautious.

It is the second time in two years Sri Lanka have been in controversy over the condition of a ball, after Dasun Shanaka was charged for a similar offence by the ICC in November 2017.

Bancroft was subsequently whacked with a nine-month ban from worldwide and first-class cricket by Cricket Australia.

The Sri Lankans contained the home side with excellent bowling, trapping Smith and tricking Dowrich.

Five penalty runs were added to the West Indies total. But fast bowler Lahiru Kumara took the most wickets, four.
