Child fires shot inside Fishers IKEA after finding gun in couch Fishers IKEA

An IKEA customer sat down on a couch, where his firearm fell out of his trousers and got lodged in the piece of furniture.

A child later found the gun and fired it, Weger told the newspaper.

Authorities in IN on Monday said a child fired a shot inside an IKEA furniture store after finding the gun in one of the couches.

Some children later sat down on the sofa and found the gun.

Police Sgt. Tom Weger, of Fishers Police, said the handgun's owner was not aware the weapon had dropped from his trousers when he sat on the couch.

CNN has attempted to reach the Fishers Police Department to determine if the gun owner will face charges.

The age of the child who shot the gun at the furniture store along Interstate 69, just northeast of Indianapolis has not been released.

A short time later, a group of kids sat down on the same couch and discovered the loaded gun.

"Safety and security of customers and co-workers is the top priority for Ikea", the company said.

IKEA issued a statement Monday saying, "we take this incident very seriously" and "offered the family of the child involved our sincerest apologies".

"As soon as we were made aware of the situation, our co-workers took the action they were trained to do to ensure the safety of customers". In the statement, IKEA said it has a "no weapon" policy in its stores to prevent incidents such as this.

Although Ikea says it has a no-weapons policy "to prevent exactly these types of situations", IN has some of the most pro-gun laws IN the United States.
