Computex 2018: Intel introduce first 5.0GHz processor, mobile Optane and more

Intel's big announcement yesterday at Computex was Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake eighth-generation Core processors alongside showing off a prototype 28-core chip. So far so Core i7-8700K, but where the Core i7-8086K differs is in the frequencies, which sit at a base of 4GHz and a peak turbo frequency of 5GHz, both 300MHz higher than on the chip it's based on. The Core i7-8086K will be the first Intel-crafted CPU supporting 5GHz turbo frequency.

For overclockers, the CPU is unlocked, which means that it can be overclocked to even greater stable speeds depending on the cooling provided to the CPU and power settings.

That's a whole ten extra cores compared with Intel's current top single-socket CPU, the Core i9 7980XE, and we saw the new megacore monster chewing through Cinebench's CPU rendering package nearly faster than I could grab a quick fuzzy picture of it.

The good news is that the CPU isn't just a concept, and Intel intends to start selling the 28-cores CPU to the masses by the end of the year.

According to Intel's announcement at Computex, the company is working on something called "Intel Low Power Display Technology", which can cut LCD power consumption in half, and thus drastically reduce battery drainage. Well, Intel is throwing down the gauntlet later this year with a monstrous 28-core processor that will ship to customers by the end of the year.

And Intel will be giving away 8,086 of the Core i7 microprocessors in a competition on Thursday, with residents in the United Kingdom among those invited to take part. The company will be giving away 8,086 Core i7-8086K CPUs - but only if you live in the US, Canada (but not Quebec), France, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and China (but not Hong Kong) - and the UK. After 24 hours, Intel will choose 8,086 winners. In the demonstration (embedded above, starting at around the 1hr10min10sec mark), the chip scored 7,334 in Cinebench R15, a benchmark we use frequently in many of our reviews.
