CRPF vehicle runs over two protesters in J&K

The death of a 22-year-old man, Qaiser Amin Bhat, who died after a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vehicle ran over him at Nowhatta in Srinagar on Friday might serve as a big blow to the ongoing Ramzan ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials say that's nonsense, and that the vehicle was surrounded by a crowd of angry young men, some of whom fell beneath the jeep-like auto when they tried to pull the soldiers out and lynch them.

Sharma claimed that "the forces maintained restraint and did not open fire".

A police officer offered a third version. "The youth climbed over the vehicle and started smashing it with stones, then the driver sensitively managed to take the vehicle out of the crowd", Mr. Sharma said. Eyewitnesses says that in order to move out of the demonstration, the CRPF vehicle sped on knocking down two boys Younis Ahmed and Qaiser Butt.

An AP photographer captured the horror in a series of photographs, though even he couldn't see how everything transpired.

After Friday prayers at the mosque, scores of protesters shouting anti-India slogans clashed with police.

Dozens of people were injured when Indian troops and police personnel used brute force on the funeral of a martyred youth in Srinagar, occupied Kashmir on Saturday.

The CRFP has maintained that the protestors were trying to lynch the occupants of the vehicle.

He said the mobile data services have been barred as a precautionary measure.

The killings rendered three (3) women widowed and five (5) children orphaned.

Indian troops and police personnel fired pellets and teargas shells to disperse the mourners at both the places, injuring dozens of them.

Rebels have been fighting Indian control since 1989, demanding that the territory be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.

India has more than 500,000 soldiers in the part of Kashmir it controls, where scores of armed groups are fighting for a merger with Pakistan.

The three separatist leaders, under the banner of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), had called for a shutdown in the Valley today to protest the death of the youth, Kaiser Bhat (21).

Almost 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown.
