Donald Trump hails 'great victory' over travel ban ruling

'While the United States supreme court ruled that the president has the authority to implement the existing travel ban, the court did not rule on whether such a policy is wise.

If the court applied the same "facially neutral" standard to segregation-era laws (rather than intent and impact), cities could ban people in black-majority neighborhoods from riding the bus, if the statute didn't mention race. He tweeted a quick reaction - "Wow!" - and then celebrated at greater length before TV cameras. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said that the U.S. President has the Constitutional authority to block "entry of nationals who can not be adequately vetted".

The ruling was along partisan lines, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing for the conservative majority.

The challengers, led by the state of Hawaii, have argued the policy was motivated by Trump's enmity toward Muslims.

TRUMP: Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. 'While the ACS is strongly committed to assuring the safety of the nation, it does remain concerned, as we expressed in January 2017, about the potentially chilling effect travel bans could have on the scientific enterprise, ' says the organisation's spokesman, Glenn Ruskin.

NPR's Nina Totenberg has full coverage of the court's decision in the travel ban case here. And it limits travel to the U.S.by certain government officials from Venezuela but otherwise doesn't apply there.

Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor was among the apex court's four liberals that wrote a dissent.

The ruling means that most people seeking to enter the United States from the affected countries will need to navigate an opaque waiver process.

She likened the case to the discredited Korematsu V. USA decision that upheld the detention of Japanese-Americans during World War II. All judges nominated by Republican presidents voted for it, and those nominated by Democrats voted against it. Issued in September, the latest version was open-ended, dropped Sudan, and added North Korea and a selection of Venezuelan officials.

India Most Dangerous For Women: Thomson Reuters Foundation Survey
Critics have pointed fingers at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government for not doing enough to protect women, the survey said. One of the Arab world's poorest countries has been devastated by a three-year civil war that stemmed from the Arab Spring.

After federal courts blocked that order, Trump signed a revised executive order March 26, 2017, targeting six countries while exempting travelers with visas and permanent-residency documents known as green cards.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International said the ban, and the anti-Muslim sentiment in which it originated, has "no place in a country that claims to value human rights".

But keep in mind that Trump openly campaigned on some version of a travel ban.

The White House issued a statement saying the ruling was "a tremendous victory for the American People and the Constitution".

"Like the Korematsu decision that upheld Japanese internment camps or Plessy v. Ferguson that established 'separate but equal, ' this decision will someday serve as a marker of shame", Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison, of Minnesota, tweeted. Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, and Sen. The President's ban on travel from several Muslim-majority countries is another brick in the invisible wall which does nothing to strengthen our national security, or our nation's shared prosperity. Restrictions on North Korea and Venezuela were not part of the challenge.

But there have been several versions of the travel ban, along with plenty of confusion.

Federal trial judges in Hawaii and Maryland had blocked the travel ban from taking effect, finding that the new version looked too much like its predecessors. It also said the Supreme Court should relegate the order "to the dustbin of history, so it will do no further harm".

Across the spectrum, National Review backed Roberts for vindicating "the authority of the presidency itself", not what the magazine called Trump's "sometimes overheated campaign rhetoric".
