A small number of reporters were given strictly controlled access earlier this week to one immigration detention centre where some children forcibly separated from their parents, or crossing the border alone, are being held. The separations were not broken down by age, and they included separations for illegal entry, immigration violations or possible criminal conduct by the adult.

Over the six-week period, 1,995 minors were separated from 1,940 adults detained trying to enter the USA illegally, the Associated Press reported on Friday after obtaining Homeland Security numbers.

The children are passed into the care of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

What has been the political response?

Acting HHS Assistant Secretary Steven Wagner outlined the policy in a recent Senate hearing, saying, "we're going to give potential sponsor information to DHS so that they can provide their input based on all of the information that they have available", which he said will "improve the quality of our decision-making about the appropriateness of the sponsors".
