In the past, tennis players Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have figured, but Williams took time out to have a baby, while Sharapova has suffered as a result of a drugs ban. Argentine soccer player (or "footballer") Lionel Messi ranks a distant second, with his $111 million contract with FC Barcelona.

It's the first time in eight years that no women features on Forbes' list. Incredibly, Mayweather, who sports a 50-0 professional boxing record, earned the incredible payday from a single fight: the August 26, 2017 defeat of UFC star Conor McGregor. The group draws from 68 different countries, then narrows it down to the 100 most famous athletes in the world. Well Mayweather, Ronaldo and Tiger Woods are the only three athletes to top the best-paid list over the past 18 years. "You all are true champions".

His rival Ronaldo, who was top of the list the two previous years, drops to third with $108m.

The Notorious is now placed fourth with $99 million. "The Notorious" was No. 24 on last year's list, earning $34 million. McGregor ($99 million) comes in fourth and Neymar ($90 million) rounds out the top five. LeBron James $85.5 M 7. While it's nice to get a little glimpse at just how much money is out there across a variety of sports, it's also a bit jarring. The U.S. women's national soccer team, which generates more revenue than the men's squad, has recently filed a wage-discrimination complaint against U.S. Soccer in 2016, with claims of being paid one-quarter of what the men make. Just behind him is Jordan Spieth with earnings of $41.2m, a staggering $11.2m of which came in prize money earned on the course.

Lewis Hamilton led the auto racing field at $51 million.

Scientists have discovered a new planet similar to Earth
The scientists found that the host star is about 600 light years away from Earth and the planet goes around the star in 19.5 days. It's very hard to discover an exoplanet because they are usually billions of times fainter than the stars they orbit.
