Former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck is leaving his high-ranking position at the NCAA to become commissioner of the XFL, the second edition of professional wrestling mogul Vince McMahon's football league.

The XFL has announced Oliver Luck as the Commissioner and CEO of the league.

The XFL isn't the only new football league looking to find footing.

Announced earlier this year, the XFL is another attempt to re-imagine the game of football, with the official launch of the league coming in 2020.

Luck previously worked as the president of NFL Europe and as the chief executive officer for the Houston Sports Authority. "His experience as both an athlete and executive will ensure the long-term success of the XFL". The pro-wrestling overlord's first attempt at an alternative to the NFL, in 2001, was marked by slapdash preparation and bad football, dooming it to a lone year of existence.

The 58-year-old was the director of athletics at West Virginia for four years before joining the NCAA in 2014.

He is also responsible for a football pedigree, as his son, Andrew, plays quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts.

He also was the first president and general manager of Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo. He graduated from University of Texas law school in 1987.

McMahon, with Luck running the football side of things, will now try to capitalize on the NFL's increasingly battered image, at least in part by appealing to the portion of the pro-football fan base that thinks players should stand during the national anthem. As executive vice president of Regulatory Affairs and Strategic Partnerships, he helped the organization investigate possible NCAA infractions.

Plans for the XFL at launch include eight teams, 40-man active rosters and a 10-week regular season schedule, with a postseason consisting of two semifinal playoff games and a championship game. Host cities and stadiums are now being sought by the league through requests for proposals.
