Gaza violence: Thousands attend funeral for Palestinian medic

Hours after the funeral two rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israel, the IDF said, triggering air raid sirens in Israeli villages near the border.

Tensions between Israel and Palestine have escalated in recent weeks after Donald Trump moved the United States embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israeli warplanes hit at least 15 targets belonging to Hamas' armed wing, the Al Qassam Brigades, the Israeli military said early on Sunday.

Clashes broke out Friday afternoon and became fierce between hundreds of protesters and Israeli soldiers in eastern Gaza Strip, close to the border with Israel, according to eyewitnesses and local media reports. Israel responded with 60 airstrikes.

The mother of Palestinian nurse Razan al-Najjar mourns during the funeral.

"This strike was conducted in response to the projectiles which were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel last night, in addition to the acts of terror approved and led by the Hamas terror organization throughout the weekend", he continued.

In a statement later on Friday, Hanan Ashrawi, Palestinian Liberation Organization executive committee member, said the USA had once again demonstrated its "blind loyalty to Israel and tried to absolve it of any wrongdoing despite its egregious violations, deliberate massacres and willful killings and war crimes".

It forecasted, however, that the euro-zone's GDP, which grew by 2.5% last year, would increase by 2.2% this year and 2.1% in 2019. At this stage, economists are forecasting the economy expanded by a solid 0.8 per cent in the quarter to 2.7 per cent annually.

The United States is set to veto on Friday an Arab-backed draft resolution calling for protection measures for the Palestinians after more than 100 were killed by Israeli forces during protests at the border with Gaza.

The Israeli army alleged that Sabarneh, who worked in construction in the area, attempted to run soldiers over with a bulldozer.

In a separate statement, the Israeli military said its troops had acted to disperse "thousands of rioters" at five locations.

Funeral of a 21-year-old medic shot and killed as she was trying to give aid to a protester drew thousands of Palestinians on Saturday. Two-thirds of the two million Palestinians in Gaza are war refugees or their descendants.

United Nations officials cited Israeli soldiers for most of the responsibility for the deaths since, as the occupying power, Israel is responsible for the protection of the people on the land it controls, with some saying Israel used excessive force in quelling dissent.

On May 14, when the protests peaked over the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem, a 14-year-old girl, Wessal Sheikh Khalil, was the first female protesters to be shot dead. Ibrahim who carried her to the hospital said, "Razan was not shooting", "Razan was saving souls and treating the wounded".

At least 122 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the unrest since the end of March. While National Public Radio today allowed an Israeli to ascribe the Gaza killings to Hamas, and failed to mention the latest victim. Hers was the only fatality registered on Friday.
