Holders Germany crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage on Wednesday in one of the biggest shocks in the tournament's history - failing to make it past the opening round for the first time since 1938.

A 2-0 defeat to South Korea cemented the defending champion's demise, something that had been on the cards since their first game when they surprisingly lost to Mexico.

South Korea scored both of their goals during stoppage time, the first of which was initially disallowed for offside but that decision was overturned after a video review.

After the defeat to Mexico, Germany had restored calm by coming from behind to win against Sweden thanks to a last-minute goal from Toni Kroos. The next thing anyone knew, he was burying a wide open shot to seal the deal for South Korea. South Korea handled their end of the bargain, but Sweden defeated Mexico 3-0 as those two countries moved on.

Germany missed their first-choice defender Mats Hummels against Sweden with a neck injury, and while the centre-back is expected to be fit for this must-win against South Korea, his Bayern Munich team-mate Jerome Boateng will miss out. That result put Germany in a good position to advance, as well. The two matches were played at the same time, one in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and the other in Kazan, Russia. "I'm shocked, I'm shocked because we didn't manage to pull it off today". They have far more quality than South Korea in their squad and should secure a comfortable victory in this one.

It was a surreal scene that continued that played out amongst Mexico fans the world over, as El Tri supporters immediately adopted South Korea as their second favorite team on the planet.

Mexico fans tensely watch as their team falls apart against Sweden.

Jerome Boateng, who was sent off against Sweden, will be replaced and many now anticipate that we will begin to see the Germany we have become accustomed to at major tournaments in this final group game.

Gomez had a decent header stopped by goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo in the 68th minute and could not properly connect with a low cross from Joshua Kimmich in the 72nd as Germany's hopes vanished.

For European World Cup winners it has been a sorry story next time out to say the least. "We were eliminated not because we didn't want to win but we never had the chance to take a lead at any point - we were always lagging behind, trying to keep up". South Korea have smaller players, very fast players.

Though Germany had 26 shots attempts to South Korea's 11, they looked disjointed at times, not showing the kind of quality in the final third that has made them the No. 1-ranked team.
