India Most Dangerous For Women: Thomson Reuters Foundation Survey

Protest against rape

Protest against rape

Pakistan, India's neighbour, has managed to wriggle out of the top 5 (good for them) and now holds the sixth position in this list.

A surprise addition to the list was the United States.

This article has been corrected to say the survey was done by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, not the Thomas Reuters Foundation as previously stated.

The release of the report comes amid mounting public outrage in India, where a series of high-profile rape cases, including two unrelated attacks on girls aged 16 and eight, have forced the issue of sexual violence back onto the national agenda.

Almost 40,000 rapes were reported in 2016 despite a greater focus on women's safety after the fatal gang rape of a student in New Delhi in 2012 that sparked nationwide protests and led to tougher laws against sexual abuse.

India has long grappled with the issue of sexual violence.

Weinstein has since pleaded not guilty to rape and criminal sex act charges.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 100 sexual assaults are reported to the authorities every day.

"We must also raise our sons to respect girls and women, and make it clear that there is zero-tolerance for gender-based violence ..."

The parameters the foundation used to judge women's safety include the overall risks women, specifically in the fields of healthcare, economic resources and discrimination, cultural, tribal, religious or customary practices, sexual violence and harassment, non-sexual violence and human trafficking. The root cause lies in the patriarchal mindsets which see women as inferior, as people you can exploit and use for domestic, sexual or financial gain.

One of the Arab world's poorest countries has been devastated by a three-year civil war that stemmed from the Arab Spring.

According to the United Nations, about 4.3 million people are internally displaced in the country due to violence aggravated by a political crisis sparked by President Joseph Kabila's refusal to step down at the end of his mandate in 2016.

India is considered to be the most unsafe country in the world for women, according to a poll by Thomson Reuters Foundation published on Tuesday.

"The ongoing war and conflict are getting worse in Afghanistan, which puts the lives of women and girls at increasing risk", said US -based Otis, a survey participant.

Of course, the levels of violence against women in India are unacceptable and ingrained misogyny results in discrimination and atrocities at various levels.

Critics have pointed fingers at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government for not doing enough to protect women, the survey said.

However, Saumya Saxena, a consultant to the Law Commission of India and women's rights activist, was wary of the criticism, saying the content of the poll was of more importance than its methodology.

The aim this time was "to see if the situation had changed", Thomson Reuters said.

"The (world's) fastest growing economy and leader in space and technology is shamed for violence committed against women", added Gangadhara.

The impact of a seven-year war drove Syria into third place in the survey, amid concerns over access to healthcare and both sexual and non-sexual violence.
