Instagram now rolling out video calls and other new features

And now, the company has rolled out video chat feature in Instagram Direct, allowing users to make and receive video calls with just one person or a group. Tap the new camera icon in the right corner, and the video chat will ring that person's phone. When you're ready to leave the video chat, tap the red phone icon at the bottom.

The functionality will also only work with people that you have an existing Direct thread with, meaning that you won't be able to start communication with a video call. Each one is still formatted with the three-tile rows and starts with a square video that automatically begins playing on the top right-hand side and takes up the space of about four photos.

Hamilton takes pole at rain-hit, crash-marred French GP
Hamilton lost his lead in the standings to Vettel two weeks ago when Mercedes couldn't deliver a planned engine upgrade on time. The 33-year-old Englishman was a third of a second clear of Vettel, who had no answer for the Mercedes cars.

You can engage anyone you have a Direct thread with. With it, users can either have a one-on-one video call or chat with up to four people at a time. To update your video chat notifications, tap the gear icon on profile and find the new video chat control in Push Notifications. With the introduction of topic channels, users should find even more content related directly to them. Interestingly, to access these new camera effects, Instagram states you'll need to follow these accounts to gain access to them. There's a new For You channel which essentially combines the best posts from your interests, and then the other topic channels that consist of other posts. The For You section is the default, but there are also categories for sports, travel, nature, style, art, music and much more. You can browse through interests by swiping from grid to grid, or go deep into a specific interest by tapping on a channel and scrolling up. Topic Channels will let you be more intentional on navigating posts on Explore tab. This sends the channel to the end of the tray, giving you the option to unmute it at any time.

Coming to the AR Camera Effects, they have been designed by Instagram partners, the likes of Ariana Grande, Buzzfeed, Liza Koshy, Baby Ariel, and National Basketball Association. All of these features are available on Android and iOS starting today. If you follow any of those accounts you'll see the new video effects in the camera app. So for example, after following Liza Koshy, there will be a new camera effect that places a mustache and thick eyebrows on you. You can download Instagram from the App Store for free.
