The bill mainly focuses on three aspects: improving tax collection, curbing tax evasion and boosting tax revenues, which are expected to increase by JD300 million annually. Activists said hundreds of people also protested peacefully in other towns, such as Ramtha in north and Maan city in the south. "Sending the draft law does not mean parliament will agree to it or even agree on its articles".

The legislative proposal is yet to be approved by the country's parliament.

On Monday (May 28), the Council of Jordanian Trade Unions endorsed the strike, after a meeting with Jordanian the Prime Minister, Hani Al-Mulki, and the council members, where no compromise has been reached.

In another part of the city, security forces used tear gas to prevent hundreds of demonstrators from joining the rally near Mulki's office, Jordanian news websites reported.

In 2016, the International Monetary Fund granted Jordan a $723 million loan in a three-year program to support economic and financial reforms aimed at lowering public debt and accelerating growth. Fuel prices were supposed to increase by 5.5% while electricity prices by 19%.

Government plans to lift taxes have brought thousands of people onto the streets in the capital Amman and other parts of Jordan since last week, shaking a USA -allied Arab country that has remained stable through years of regional turmoil. "We are working day and night to overcome this hard situation".

Another protestor and a Bank employee Mohammad Shalabiya, 28, said the demonstrators wanted "to tell the government that the citizen's income isn't suitable for this kind of law and that we have a right to demonstrate". Speaking of the issue, Lina Rsheidat, a 35-year-old housewife says the proposed law was "unjust" and would "harm the Jordanian people".

According to official estimates, 18.5% of Jordan's population are unemployed, while 20% are on the brink of poverty.

With Syria's devastating seven-year since 2011, as many as one million refugees have arrived in Jordan to survive, worsening the state of Jordan's struggling economy.

Amman has repeatedly urged global donors to provide extra funds to help it host them.

Jordanian protesters have called on Prime Minister Hani Mulki to step down, vowing they will not "kneel", earning support from trade unions as well as a majority of MPs opposed to the new taxation. His appointment nevertheless sends a positive message to foreign donors that Jordan will press ahead with reforms, though in a gradual way, they said.
