Leno concedes San Francisco mayor's race to London Breed

The city's charter mandated that Breed take the city's top spot because she was the next in the line of succession as president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

On June 14, London Breed secured the San Francisco mayoral win over opponent, Mark Leno.

"No matter where you come from, no matter what you decide to do in life, you can do anything you want to do", Breed said Wednesday on the steps of City Hall.

After more than a week of suspense, San Francisco now knows its mayor: London Breed. She was born and bred in San Francisco, raised by her impoverished grandmother in low-quality public housing.

"This is an wonderful city, and we had a number of fantastic candidates who ran for mayor". This was especially true on housing, where Breed is seen as more business-friendly and likely to side with developers, while Kim and Leno cast themselves as more likely to extract concessions from builders around affordable housing. "And I am prepared to make sure that I do everything that I can to work together, to bring the Board of Supervisors together, to bring everyone together for the goal of solving our most challenging problems". Leno said he saw no point in waiting for the additional ballots to be tallied, as the trend in Breed's favor was clear. "She was very gracious".

Leno said Wednesday that he called Breed to congratulate her.

Her bio says she served as executive director of the African American Art & Culture Complex on Fulton Street in the Western Addition for over a decade and San Francisco Redevelopment Agency Commissioner for five years. "I look forward to partnering to move San Francisco in a positive direction". Leno said that he called chief rival London Breed with his congratulations in her new job as mayor.

Trump Says He Won't Sign Compromise Immigration Bill
Trump said on Fox News' " Fox and Friends " that he is not planning to sign the negotiated measure. There is no special carve out for green cards or a pathway to citizenship.

"I'm proud to live in the largest city in America with a woman as mayor", stated Kim. "I also want to thank Mark Leno and acknowledge his almost two decades of service as a publicly elected official who has accomplished so much on behalf of our city". Mark Leno for calling earlier in the day to offer his congratulations on her victory. "I commit my full support, both personally, and through my staff, to make this transition between our administrations as smooth as possible".

Becoming the city's first black woman elected as mayor "is really fantastic and really an honor", said Breed, particularly since she is a native of the city who grew up in public housing and saw family members and friends be killed or jailed. Leno had received 109,585 votes, or 49.58 percent, according to San Francisco election officials. Breed had initially been appointed acting mayor after Lee's death but was replaced until the election after city supervisors voted her out.

On Monday, the elections department included about 9,000 votes that were tallied since Sunday. He pointed to other local results from the election as progressive victories.

The mayoral vote reflects San Francisco ranked-choice voting, in which voters mark their first, second and third choices.

Toward the end of the campaign, Leno and Breed threw in their lots together, asking voters to rank them one and two on their ballots, in hopes of using the city's ranked-choice system to compensate for Breed's expected strength in first-place votes.

The victor of the mayoral race will serve the remainder of Lee's term, which runs through January 2020.

As Heather Knight gushed in The San Francisco Chronicle, "Lost in all the nerding out was the sheer significance of what was being counted".
