Man Utd's £55m Bid For Spurs Defender Rebuffed

"I would love Toby to stay because I believe he is the best defender in the world when he is right at it, but we will see where it goes from here".

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have reached a deadlock in talks about the transfer of defender Toby Alderweireld, according to reports in the British media. The Belgian global was a mainstay in the Spurs defence prior to an injury last season.

Alderweireld's Tottenham contract runs out in 2020, but it features a clause that will allow him to leave for £25m next summer if no new deal is agreed.

Tottenham have suggested that Alderweireld should be valued close to the £75m Liverpool paid to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton last January, but United are not willing to consider that kind of offer and have made Spurs chairman Daniel Levy aware that they will consider alternative options unless a breakthrough is make imminently.

While Tottenham wished to tie the Belgian global to a new deal, they are unwilling to meet his wage demands and are ready to sell him this summer as they want to avoid his £25 million release clause to come into play next summer.

Alderweireld's future continues to be mired in uncertainty.

United have already got a couple of bits of business done this summer.

Tottenham are reluctant to lose Alderweireld and have offered the defender a contract extension worth around £120,000 per week, but United's approach is understood to be significantly more lucrative. Injuries to key personnel were a key factor, but the Manchester United boss has been left unimpressed by the performance of some of his centre-backs.

It's still relatively early days yet, and so United are expected to add at least a couple more new faces in time for the new season.
