The new studios will all be housed beneath the Microsoft Studios brand alongside a new venture called The Initiative led by former Crystal Dynamics head of studio Darrell Gallagher. Undead Labs is known for the State of Decay franchise. Microsoft Studios already contains groups like Halo-maker 343 Industries and the team behind Minecraft, which Microsoft acquired in 2014 for $2.5 billion.

Spencer confirmed that Playground is making a brand-new game, which is rumored to be Fable 4. And, Compulsion Games is behind the dystopian We Happy Few. If all goes right, these acquisitions should fill out Microsoft's sparse lineup of Xbox exclusives and strengthen its competition against Sony's strong roster of console exclusives.
