In its ruling Monday, the Supreme Court rejected those findings and said the lower court got the case backwards by putting the onus on Texas.

Iancucristi / Dreamstime.comThe Supreme Court today punted another case back down to the state level rather than further explore whether wedding service providers could legally be ordered to serve same-sex couples.

In dissent, however, three judges said that Dassey was "subjected to myriad psychologically coercive techniques but the state court did not review his interrogation with the special care required by Supreme Court precedent".

Associated Press writer Mark Sherman contributed from Washington.

Though he did not find one in that case, he signaled his openness to striking down extreme partisan gerrymanders if the court could agree on a standard to do so. An appeals court reversed the decision, ruling for American Express.

The federal government denied his petition for a writ of certiorari-a plea for the Supreme Court to take up his case-on Monday.

Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel said in a statement that his office was "pleased" with the Supreme Court's decision not to take the case. "T$3 here is no indication that there were flaws in the application of civil rights law in [Stutzman's case]".

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled 5-4 to uphold Texas electoral districts in a significant decision that condoned a legal strategy Texas Republicans used to get away with discriminatory districts for almost a decade.

Phillips and Stutzman had powerful and convincing arguments that neither of them turn away LGBT people, but merely refuse to lend their creative work (and implicitly their public support) to a "wedding" they consider a departure from the idea of marriage.

In an unsigned order Monday, the court struck down a lower court opinion that had invalidated congressional maps in North Carolina as an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander and instructed the lower court to revisit the case in light of the Supreme Court's recent opinion concerning maps in Wisconsin.

In February 2017, the Washington Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling against Stutzman.

The Washington case centers around 73-year-old Stutzman, owner of Arlene's Flowers in Richland, Washington.

The couple, Curt Freed and Robert Ingersoll, and Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson originally sued the Tri-Cities florist in 2013, arguing state anti-discrimination laws prohibit businesses from discriminating based on sexual orientation.

A ruling was also made by Benton County Superior Court Judge Alexander C Ekstrom in February 2015, who said the florist, Arlene's Flowers, violated consumer protections in saying she would not sell flowers to the longtime customer for their wedding due to her religious beliefs.

Stutzman told reporters on the news conference call she is "very thankful and grateful" the high court has allowed her case to continue.
