The Independent Russia warns Norway of ‘consequences’ after it invites in more US Marines

Amid heightening tensions between Russian Federation and European nations, the government of Norway has approved plans to more than double the number of U.S. Marines permitted within their borders as a rotational training force.

"We see it as clearly unfriendly, and it will not remain free of effect", it said in a statement.

Some 330 USA marines are now stationed in Norway after arriving in January 2017 to train for fighting in winter conditions.

The U.S. initially sent Marines to the country past year to train for fighting in winter conditions.

"We see it as clearly unfriendly and it will not be without consequences", the Embassy writes in a Facebook-statement after the Norwegian Government earlier this week said it would invite more U.S. Marines.

They were the first foreign troops to be stationed in Norway since World War Two. The U.S. troops will be asked to stay for at least five years after that, according to reports, and are expected to be sent to regions of Norway that border Russian Federation. Last year, opposition members asked the government if the U.S. Marines are being used to make up for weaknesses in Norway's defense capabilities that the government should address through more investment.

Soereide also said that the decision to increase the US presence has broad support in parliament and does not constitute the establishment of a permanent USA base in Norway.

The additional seats, constructed well outside the original stadium structure, will be taken down once the tournament ends. From 1970 until Friday, Uruguay had lost three games and drawn another three in its opening World Cup games.

Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide assured reporters that no permanent base is being established.

Russian officials have previously protested Norway's decision to host US Marines, with one politician saying that the move would cause Norway to be targeted by the Russian military.

There are now 330 troops in the country, but this would be increased to 700.

"We believe that European security must be equal and indivisible".

"The defence of Norway depends on the support of our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, as is the case in most other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries", said Defence Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen in a statement.

Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said the Department of Defense welcomed the Norwegian announcement, saying the rotational training allows US Marines to "take part in world-class winter and mountain warfare training", which he said would "strengthen the US military's bond with the Norwegian military, and build readiness to respond in times of crisis".
