Sir Christopher Chope, who on Friday blocked a new law that would make upskirting illegal, says he does support the legislation.

Mr Jones - who strongly campaigned for the offence to be brought into law - tweeted that he was "simply lost for words" after the Voyeurism (Offences) Bill was blocked this afternoon, after Conservative MP Sir Christopher Chope reportedly chose to object to it when it was raised in the House of Commons.

End Violence Against Women Coalition co-director Sarah Green said: "We welcome this announcement but also implore the Government - on a day when they make an announcement like this and say that protecting victims of sexual offences is a priority - to speak up on the horrific crisis around disclosure of evidence in rape cases, and the sluggish rape conviction rates when reporting is going through the roof".

"I said, "well, I can help you with that", Ms Martin added. Only one MP need cry "object" to stop a Private Members' Bill from proceeding, which is why Chose was able to have such unilateral influence.

"The suggestion that I am some kind of pervert is a complete travesty of the truth", said Chope, who has frequently used his power to block bills put forth by backbench legislators.

She emphasised that "every month matters" as we approach festival season.

This behaviour is a disgusting invasion of privacy which leaves victims feeling degraded.

Government - rebel peace talks break down
On Wednesday, the amendments will return again to the Commons , where May faces the possibility of defeat over a meaningful vote. She added: "We can't have a situation where every time we have to take a decision we have to go back and have a lengthy debate".

Martin's next step is to meet with Tory MP Lucy Frazer, along with Hobhouse and her lawyer Ryan Whelan to plan their next steps. I remain positive, though.

"I am disappointed the Bill didn't make progress in the Commons today, and I want to see these measures pass through Parliament - with government support - soon".

"In order to keep children and young people safe from harm we must teach them at the earliest opportunity to respect each other's privacy, to know their rights, and to understand issues around consent, coercion, and unwanted/unsafe touch".

It will be returned to the house for another Friday Private Members Bill session on July 6, again with government support.

One British politician has single-handedly blocked a bill that would criminalize "upskirting" in the UK. It has become common with the spread of smartphones, with embarrassing photos often posted online.

Now victims in England and Wales are forced to seek prosecution through other legal avenues, such as outraging public decency or harassment, prompting the call for a specific law similar to one already in force in Scotland.
