Musk says Tesla hit with `extensive' sabotage by rogue employee

Musk finds saboteur in Tesla suspects foul play

Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Monday in an email to staff that an unnamed Tesla employee had conducted "extensive and damaging sabotage" to the company's operations including allegedly making unspecified code changes to its manufacturing operating system and sending what the email said was sensitive Tesla data to unnamed third parties. Musk himself bought approximately 72,000 Tesla shares costing him around $25 million, which coincided with a boost in Tesla's share price from $342.77 on Tuesday to a closing price of $358.17 on Friday. Musk did not specify to whom he was referring.

We reached out to Tesla regarding CNBC's story but the company declined to comment at this time.

From the unconfirmed email obtained by CNBC, it seems that the saboteur is already in custody and has owned up to his (yes, male) crimes. The company is now investigating whether said saboteur was working alone or, more likely, working with outside organizations.

The tremor caused power outages in some areas, suspending train operations during the morning commuting hours. Television images showed passengers getting off trains onto the tracks between stations.

The organizations that Musk believes could be responsible include the petrochemical industry, the traditional automotive manufacturers and Wall Street short-sellers, but given the relatively huge number of people that the company is laying off as part of its path to profitability, that seems to be a more likely culprit. The smoldering was extinguished in a matter of seconds. Production has resumed and there were no injuries or significant equipment damage, she added.

Last week, Tesla announced it was cutting more than 3,000 employees - about 9 percent of its workforce - in an effort to become profitable. However, Tesla's stock price has rallied almost 17 percent since the company's June annual shareholder meeting where Musk promised profitability in the third quarter. Tesla is still one of the most shorted stocks on the market, and many are skeptical that Musk can hit his weekly production rate goal of 5,000 Model 3 cars by the end of the month.
