New Number One As Forbes Publish Highest-Paid Athletes List 2018

Floyd Mayweather is the champ at making money.

Mayweather heads the world's highest-paid athletes for the fourth time in seven years, thanks to a United States dollars 275 million payday for his August boxing match against UFC star Conor McGregor.

With an additional $10 million in endorsements, Mayweather earned a total of $285 million between June 1 2017 and June 1, 2018, comfortably eclipsing the second-placed figure on the list, football star Lionel Messi, who made $111 million. That stems largely from his bout in August with UFC's Conor McGregor.

Cristiano Ronaldo - top for the past two years - drops to third, with Lionel Messi edging him out of second place after signing a new contract.

Soccer players held three of the top five spots. "The soaring National Basketball Association salaries are a result of an increased salary cap, driven by the league's $24 billion TV deal, which tipped off with the 2016-17 season".

Brazilian footballer Neymar was fifth on the list with $90 million in earnings, his salary boosted by his record-breaking transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain past year. Since the list was expanded to at least 50 people in 2010, there had been one woman on the list every single year.

The top 100 athletes earned a total of $3.8bn, up 23% from previous year.

The starting income for the 2018 list was a record $22.9m, up $1.5m from the previous year, largely due to soaring salaries in the National Basketball Association.

This year the Indian national cricket board "The Board of Control for Cricket in India" named Kohli as one of just five players to receive the newly-created A+ contracts, which guarantee an annual retainer of more than United States dollars 1 million, it said.

Others on the list are American basketball player LeBron James (6), Tennis star Roger Federer (7), golfer Tiger Woods (16), tennis player Rafael Nadal (20) and golfer Rory McIlroy (26).
