But Trump still needs to overcome public sentiment that the U.S.

They agreed to create combined teams for the upcoming games and for other worldwide competitions, such as a shooting competition set to begin in August in the South.

An announcement could come this week to suspend the major joint military exercises, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports.

At 12 June, Mr Trump and Mr Kim signed what the USA president called a "comprehensive" agreement.

South Korea and Japan are both market economies, democracies and United States allies, and both are threatened by nuclear-armed North Korea, but their relationship is heavily strained by historical and territorial issues.

South Korea's key advantage is that it falls under the protection of its US ally, with a 28,500-strong military force permanently based in the country.

The trip will be Kim's third to China since March, when he made his inaugural foreign trip as leader.

However, South Korean President Moon Jae-in asked for cooperation on the issue.

Beijing, North Korea's only economic ally, has already suggested sanctions against North Korea could be eased.

The United States had led an worldwide sanctions drive to press North Korea to abandon development of nuclear weapons capable of reaching the United States. It has agreed to discuss denuclearization and to close a nuclear test area. For North Korea, this includes permitting outside inspectors into the country. The summit comes less than a year after the pair threatened each other with nuclear annihilation.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rushed to the Chinese capital to brief Xi and other top leaders soon after the Trump-Kim meeting.

He added: "The denuclearization deal with North Korea is being praised and celebrated all over Asia". It's my term. I said I'd like to halt it because it's bad to be negotiating and doing it. "I believe that they will find a midway point".

The Americans insist that sanctions will remain in place until the North completely dismantles its weapons programme.

Officials from the two Koreas met at the border truce village of Panmunjom on Monday and reached several agreements aimed at strengthening sporting ties.
