The shocking murder of 20-year-old rapper XXXTentacion has again opened the debate between separating art from an artist.

Florida rapper XXXTentacion is reportedly in critical condition after getting shot today (June 18).

But much of his brief career had been mired in controversy.

The "Look at Me" rapper, who'd recently been freed from house arrest to tour in support of his Billboard-topping sophomore disc ?

In a separate incident from 2015, according to Pitchfork, XXXTentacion pleaded no contest to aggravated battery with a firearm and armed home invasion charges. Onfroy was facing over a dozen felony charges including witness tampering while awaiting trial at the time of his death.

A man who answered the phone at the dealership where the shooting occurred said they could not discuss it due to the ongoing investigation. His mother would buy him clothes, phones and other gifts.

In one incident, she accused him of headbutting her, forcing her into a bathtub, and kicking her because she had sung the words to a song by a friend of his in the vehicle, she said in the deposition.

After his music was briefly removed from Spotify under its prior controversial "Hate Content and Hateful Content Policy", the rapper spoke out on Twitter.

While he made headlines for his legal woes, he connected to millions of fans musically.

Others spoke about how his music helped them through deep bouts of depression, something the artist was known to address often in his music.

When 21-year-old Wyatt Rubin learned of the rising star's death Monday afternoon, he jumped in his vehicle and headed to the scene, playing the rapper's songs on the drive over.
