After the five-time Grand Slam victor Sharapova lost in the French Open quarterfinals to Garbine Muguruza, she hit back at Williams' accusations and comments about her book.

Maria Sharapova left the French Open without much of a fight, but had enough left in the tank to deliver a parting shot at Serena Williams.

She will meet either US Open champion Sloane Stephens or her fellow American Madison Keys in Saturday's final.

Halep broke to love as Muguruza wilted in the next game, sealing her third final appearance at Roland Garros and ensuring she will stay as world number one after the tournament. "I think everyone would ask me questions, as well", she said.

The spirit ebbed away from Muguruza, who converted just two of the eight break points she carved out, and a backhand which sailed long sealed her fate in the 10th game. She will face the victor of Thursday's all-American semifinal between Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys.

Garbine Muguruza roared into the French Open semi-finals with a 6-2, 6-1 demolition job of Maria Sharapova on Wednesday.

"To have had the victories that I have had, to have the results that I have, obviously moving a step in the right direction", said Sharapova who had made the last 8 in Madrid and semis in Rome in the run-up to Paris.

She also was coming off a lopsided victory in the quarterfinals a day earlier, overwhelming Sharapova 6-2, 6-1.

I think it's tough to just assess a single tournament. Thanks to her sublime athleticism and great ball-striking, she can essentially "shut the court down" against her opponents, slowly smothering them with controlled aggression, injections of pace or go on lock-down defensively. I'm not ever going to try to be a person that isn't nice, so that feels more authentic to me and, you know, I think I'm still doing okay. She double-faulted three times in the opening game, part of her 27 unforced errors. I just went and searched for her in the training room. Some of those matches were very defining for me. I will play my game against her, as I did past year.

Keys will have to be patient in this semi-final, and only pull the trigger when she's ready to finish off the point.

A rare misplaced groundstroke from Halep gave third seed Muguruza a break to get on the board at 5-1, but Halep put away another forehand victor to take a one-sided opening set.
