Excitement high expectations lower on Trump Kim summit eve

Donald Trump has made a decision to leave his historic summit with Kim Jong-un 15 hours earlier than expected, flying back to Washington on Tuesday night instead of Wednesday morning.

It's a dramatic departure for Trump, who kicked off 2018 bragging that his nuclear button is "much bigger" than Kim's. East Coast time - according to the White House.

When she attended the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics earlier this year, she became the first member of North Korea's ruling family to visit South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Two days after arguing with western allies at the G-7 summit over trade, President Trump is prepared to declare victory in talks with nuclear-armed North Korea - regardless of what happens.

Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage expected little progress on the key issue of defining denuclearization. Some analysts said a Kim commitment to specific negotiations on denuclearisation could well be enough for Tuesday's summit to be a success. It is believed that Trump and Kim will begin with a two-hour one-on-one session with translators, before an expanded meeting that includes advisers.

The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

The summit represents a major gamble for each leader, a high-wire act that carries the elevated potential for risk and reward that Trump has become increasingly comfortable with. On the U.S. side, Trump was to be joined by Pompeo, chief of staff John Kelly, national security adviser John Bolton and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, along with a few others.

Mr Trump introduced "our great First Lady" at the event, and said: "She went through a little rough patch but she's doing great". She could not attend the Singapore summit because she is not allowed to fly in her one month of recovery, according to Donald.

On May 30, Pompeo met with North Korean spy chief Kim Yong-chol in NY; their discussion concluded two hours earlier than expected, as Kim refused to make any commitment whatsoever on denuclearization, according to the Washington Post.

"Sending Kim Yong-chol to NY may serve to cut out a layer of middlemen - to get urgent clarifications and/or send a relatively unfiltered message to Washington that they are going to have to modify their approach if this is going to happen", Mr Pollack said. But no one can credibly suggest that a durable or verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula can be achieved when North Korea remains a completely closed and totalitarian state.

Trump is set to meet with Kim in Singapore on Tuesday morning.

As he disembarked from Air Force One, Trump told reporters that he feels "very good" about his prospects.

Last year it carried out by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched missiles capable of reaching the USA mainland, sending tensions soaring to a level unseen in years as a newly-elected Trump traded threats of war and colorful personal insults with Kim, with Trump dubbed a "dotard" and Kim "Little Rocket Man".

It was Kim's only foray on Monday outside of the St. Regis hotel, where he's been staying since his arrival a day earlier.
