"Space Force" ordered by President Trump

Trump directs creation of 'space force' as sixth branch of military

"Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea", Trump said in March. Some key Democrats oppose the idea, including Florida Senator Bill Nelson, who said via Twitter, "The president told a USA general to create a new Space Force as 6th branch of military today, which generals tell me they don't want".

In his statement, Trump said: "This is a giant step toward inspiring future generations and toward reclaiming America's proud destiny in space..." But near the beginning of his remarks, Trump focused on the security implications of operating in space.

The announcement both affirms and alters the content of Trump's previous remarks on adding space to the broad area under the USA military's actionable purview.

So what comes next? The service would be presumably be responsible for the extensive array of surveillance and communication satellites operated by the US Armed Forces, and more controversially for potential anti-satellite weapons and deterrence.

President George W. Bush in 2004 said humans would return to the moon by 2020.

"Only Congress can organize the military", Loverro told SpaceNews.

At the end of 2017, the Space Corps provision was taken out of the House version of the NDAA where it originated.

Exactly how long it will take to establish Space Force as the sixth branch of the United States military remains to be seen.

"At a time when we are trying to integrate the Department's joint warfighting functions, I do not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations."
It's not clear if the president's comments Monday were meant to override or influence that study.

U.S. President Donald Trump displays his signature after signing a national space policy directive during a meeting of the National Space Council in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., June 18, 2018.

Paul Manafort jailed following obstruction of justice charges
It's not clear exactly what Manafort knows, but he does appear to be a linchpin between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation . Manafort pleaded not guilty to the charges in the superseding indictment that added the obstruction and conspiracy charges.

During the announcement on Monday, he mentioned that the space program was a national security issue, saying that he doesn't want "China and other countries leading us".

Meanwhile, nearly every other personnel and family readiness policy would be specific to the space force and open to new development. "It is going to be something, so important". "We've always led", he added.

The president's directive sets the stage for a contentious debate as the House and Senate prepare to hash out a final version of the 2019 NDAA.

Some are anxious that the Space Force would duplicate existing efforts. "They can beat us", he said.

Dunford replied, "We got it". "Organizational changes don't fix all the problems".

Others thought the president had his priorities screwed up.

A tweet by Sen.

But there was a sceptical reaction from Bill Nelson, the Democratic senator for Florida, home of Cape Canaveral. It called for the new Corps to have its own seat on the Military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, but still report to the Department of the Air Force, similar to the Marine Corps' relationship with the Navy.

President Trump today announced his intention to create a "Space Force" that would oversee the military's activities off-world.
