Steel and aluminum tariffs draw fire from Stefanik and Canadian officials

"As we have said, we will always stand up for our workers, and today we're announcing retaliatory measures to this attack on our industry".

But hope faded when US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced that the United States would impose tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum from Canada and others from Friday.

German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz condemned Washington's move, saying: "This one-sided decision is wrong and in my view against worldwide law".

"These tariffs are an affront to the long standing security partnership between Canada and the United States, and in particular, an affront to the thousands of Canadians who have fought and died alongside their American brothers in arms", he said, noting the USA national security justification for its measures.

Morneau, who presided at the ministerial meeting in Whistler, said even though the group found common ground on many subjects, G7 members are now forced to do whatever they can to persuade Trump to withdraw the tariffs.

Trump also issued an unusual late-night statement criticising Canada.

Canada plans to impose tariffs of up to 25% on about $13bn worth of U.S. exports from 1 July.

European Union trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom announced the bloc would take the USA to the World Trade Organisation to challenge the legality of the new tariffs, saying negotiations with Washington were not now possible.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called Mr Trump to tell him the tariffs were "illegal" but was told by Mr Trump that there was a need to "rebalance trade" with the EU.

A list of countermeasures would include tariffs on US metals and food products such as yogurt, pizza and cucumbers, as well as household products like mattresses and refrigerators.

As reported by CNN, the said trade tariffs will come into effect from Friday midnight. So naturally, on Thursday the Trump administration took a dramatic step to disrupt USA exports and pour ice water on the economy. Canada's planned retaliatory measures will take effect on July 1, and stay in place until the USA backs down, stated a press release issued by the Department of Finance Canada.

"We're concerned that these actions are actually not conducive to helping our economy, they actually are destructive, and that is consistently held across the six countries that expressed their point of view to Secretary Mnuchin", Morneau added. Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom added that the US, through months of negotiations, threatened steep tariffs in order to obtain trade concessions from the EU.

In a tweet, Trudeau also furthered that the United States tariffs are "illegal and counterproductive measures under NAFTA Chapter 20 and at the WTO" and that "it is simply ridiculous to view any trade with Canada as a national security threat to the USA".

Canada's minister of foreign affairs, Chrystia Freeland, said her country would place tariffs on up to 16 billion Canadian dollars ($12.4 billion) worth of American goods, including steel and aluminum.

"We absolutely do not rule out countermeasures", Fox said.
