The former USA president appeared on The Late Show Tuesday night to promote his book, The President is Missing, with James Patterson, and was granted a do-over after ill-advised remarks he made a day earlier about Monica Lewinsky.

Still, Clinton says, "It was [a] very painful thing that happened 20 years ago", adding that he had to "live with the consequences every day since".

Clinton was asked on Tuesday by the host of CBS' "Late Show", Stephen Colbert, if he realised why some people thought his response was "tone-deaf" in light of the MeToo movement.

After the crowd laughed, Clinton continued: "Here is what I want to say: It wasn't my finest hour".

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), a longtime key Clinton ally, told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Monday, "I wish [Clinton] had said today, that he had said many times, 'I apologize, ' publicly apologized, felt disgusting for the actions that he did and moved on".

But he "also took issue with the questions we asked earlier this week", Melvin jumped in, claiming Clinton "appeared to suggest NBC News took his words out of context". But, he conceded, after watching the interview, "I was mad at me - not for the first time". I meant it then and I mean it now.

'I have the absolute right to pardon myself'
Former mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani says President Trump could probably pardon himself, but he won't. But in the only court challenge to that so far, a judge supported Mueller's mandate.

"I remember when the Lewinsky scandal occurred", Behar said.

Bill Clinton regrets how his NBC interview came off.

He talked about apologizing to the Lewinskys multiple times. "I think people would have been at least somewhat sympathetic to him, rather than the outrage that he's generated with his doubling down on a really, I think, untenable and unpalatable position".

Even Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), who aligned herself with the #MeToo movement in October 2017 when she accused a former chief of staff of former Rep. Leo Ryan's (D-Calif.) of sexually harassing her in her 20s, said Tuesday on CNN's "Out Front with Erin Burnett" that Clinton should have apologized personally to Lewinsky. Clinton said he had publicly apologized to everyone for his behavior. The Lewinsky episode involved "a lengthy investigation that ended with Clinton becoming just the second president ever to be impeached", Melvin reminded viewers.

Translation: Sorry I wasn't more understanding of young Melvin's ignorance and didn't seize the opportunity to patiently educate his entire generation. "Well", Clinton said with a sparkle in his eye, "2016 you had Vladimir up in there", phrasing that tickled Colbert with its first-name familiarity. As her colleagues discussed the lingering effects of Clinton's transgressions, Meghan McCain wanted to know why Clintons keep getting passes from the media, and why the former president can't do more to acknowledge his wrongdoings amid the #MeToo movement.
