W.C: Xhaka, Shaqiri in hot water after controversial celebrations

Switzerland's midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri celebrates the victory during the Fifa World Cup 2018 group E preliminary round soccer match between Switzerland and Serbia at the Arena Baltika Stadium in Kaliningrad, Russia, on Friday.

Both Xhaka and Shaqiri are of Albanian-Kosovan heritage and the salutes that they both performed after their goals in a 2-1 win are thought to be a reference to that.

Both players have Kosovar roots and formed a double-headed eagle with their hands, which resembles the eagle on the Albanian flag.

Valon Behrami recovered from an injury doubt to play as Switzerland came from behind to beat Serbia 2-1 in World Cup Group E thanks to Xherdan Shaqiri's late victor.

Shaqiri was born in Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. Serbia doesn't recognize Kosovo's independence and relations between the two countries remain tense.

FIFA has also opened proceedings against the Serbian Football Association for "crowd disturbance and the display of political and offensive messages by Serbian fans". "We know everything about Switzerland", stated their head coach Mladen Krstajic after their first match, which was also his first competitive game in charge of the side.

The players denied that their celebration was political.

"I'm very happy to score the goal, that's all".

Kosovo's president Hashim Thaci wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations to goalscorers Xhaka, Shaqiri and entire #Switzerland on a well deserved win!"

Uruguay hammers Russian Federation 3-0 to top Group A
Match-winner against Egypt, Jose Gimenez is out for Uruguay , whilst Alan Dzagoev is still out with a hamstring injury. His composure on the ball and first touch was on show and will have impressed potential new manager Unai Emery.

Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic, who himself was born in Bosnia, appeared to condemn the pair's actions, saying: "You should never mix politics and football".

Shaqiri also had Kosovo flag on his right heel. His brother Taulant plays for Albania.

After the game, midfielder Xhaka posted a picture of his celebration on his officials Facebook page, but told the press "frankly, my opponents did not interest me at all".

When asked about his celebration Shaqiri said, 'It's just emotion. "In football, you have always emotions".

In the 30th minute, there was a great opportunity for Switzerland in the box but it was ultimately denied by Vladimir Stojkovic, who kept out Seferovic's attempt.

To say sport should stay on the field and doesn't trasncend life and society is incorrect.

Shaqiri then nearly put his side in front as his wonderful left-footed curler, aimed for the top corner, hit the upright.

"It was a wonderful atmosphere and that's what support should be about".

Serbia have three, but must face Brazil in their last Group E fixture while the Swiss take on pointless Costa Rica and are in pole position to go through to the knockout stage.
