In the picture, Maverick stands on a deck while looking at his F-14A Tomcat. He's holding his helmet, which features "Maverick" across the back. The words "feel the need" appear on top of the image. Oh, we feel it alright!

"Aviators are back, the need for speed", Cruise said.

One thing worth noticing is the fact that "Mav" has his famous HGU-33 helmet in his hand even though that kind of old-fashioned helmet has always been replaced within the U.S. Navy and other air arms around the world by the more modern Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System or HGU-68/P helmets.

Over three decades after the original action film about jet fighter pilots roared into theaters, the long-discussed sequel looks to be formally underway as of Cruise's Twitter post (which we first spotted at CinemaBlend).

Cruise has been talking about a Top Gun sequel since I was in a Freshmen in High School, which makes it truly surreal that the film has finally begun production. "The Navy is very different now than it was in 1986". "Now, here in 2017, the Navy's been at war for 20 years..."

Also returning to the fold will be composer Harold Faltermeyer, who penned the iconic score for the first movie. "It has to adapt".

So far the plot of the sequel's been kept under wraps and, other than Tom, no casting's been announced. "When he wasn't showboating in the sky, he was romancing Kelly McGillis" Charlie in the evenings, and crooning the Righteous Brothers alongside Anthony Edwards' Goose.

"The 55-year-old star simply wrote "#Day1" in the caption.
