Global markets were mixed Tuesday as traders monitored USA efforts to gain an upper hand in trade with China, particularly in the technology sector. Facebook Inc declined 2.7%, Amazon.com Inc fell 3.1%, Netflix Inc slid 6.5%, and Alphabet Inc lost 2.6%.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 281.66 points to 24,299.23. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.2 percent to 28,619.21 and the Shanghai Composite in mainland China slipped 0.6 percent to 2,842.22. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 shed 0.8% and in South Korea the Kospi was little changed.

United States stocks skidded on Monday as investors grew concerned that technology companies could be pulled into the broadening trade dispute between the U.S. and China.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin tweeted the report was "fake news", saying the statement was not specific to China, but all countries who are tying to steal U.S. technology. "The combination of interest rates and trade wars are at the top of the list", said Oliver Pursche, chief market strategist at Bruderman Asset Management in NY, referring to the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision earlier in June to rate interest rates. The market recovered when Peter Navarro, one of President Donald Trump's top trade advisers, told CNBC that there was no plan for investment restrictions and that the administration's probe into alleged technology theft is limited to China. S&P 500 e-minis were down 13 points, or 0.47 percent and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 53.75 points, or 0.74 percent.

The S&P 500 index lost 37 points or 1.4 percent to 2,717, and the Nasdaq fell 161 points or 2.1 percent to 7,532. Harley-Davidson is falling after it said it will shift the production of some motorcycles to Europe in response to taxes the European Union put on US exports.

Taxes by the U.S. on tens of billions of dollars in imports from China, and retaliatory taxes by China on USA goods, are set to take effect in less than two weeks.
