"We have taken essentially a defensive action", a senior USA official told reporters, adding that "further threats that are going to hurt other industries. would be a mistake".

The first batch of tariffs will hit 545 US products worth about $34 billion, including agricultural products, such as soybeans, corn and wheat, automobiles, beef, pork and seafood, and will start July 6. In April, it said it would levy 25 per cent tariffs on imports of 106 USA products, including soybeans, automobiles, chemicals and aircraft, in response to proposed American duties.

China's Ministry of Commerce had promised swift retaliation after Trump announced the tariffs on Friday morning.

A third prong of the Trump Administration's pugnacious trade policy has been aimed squarely at China, through Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

In response to Trump's decision, the Chinese government said it would levy tariffs against USA products and services.

Trump's top trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, was instrumental in that deal, which helped shield Detroit automakers from Japanese competition, but at a cost.

But his proposed tariffs against China risk igniting a damaging trade war involving the world's two biggest economies. -China relations "are both very important to me". The wording contrasts with attempts from some USA officials such as Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro to use more toned-down vocabulary-with Navarro characterizing the back-and-forth between the two nations as a "trade dispute" instead. "This situation is no longer sustainable". "This will further pressure agricultural families and businesses already struggling with below break-even commodity prices". The President went on to note China has been "engaging in several unfair practices related to the acquisition of American intellectual property and technology" and this harms the United States' economic and national security while also deepening the trade imbalance between the two countries. "It's no longer a negotiating tactic, it's a tax on their livelihoods", Kuehl said. "When they do, they're not going to remain silent", he said.

It said the tariffs would be applied in two stges: an initial slimmed-down list of 818 product lines worth $34 billion, followed by a second list of products that have largely benefited from industrial policies including the "Made in China 2025" technology development programme.

Iran vs. Morocco in 2018 FIFA World Cup
The own goal was the only score between the teams, as Iran secured a 1-0 victory for its first World Cup win since 1998. Spain hit back to lead 3-2 before the Real Madrid man scored his third from just outside the box.

Trump, in his press conference in Singapore on Tuesday, said the USA has a 'tremendous deficit in trade with China and we have to do something about it'.

"China previously identified nearly $1 billion worth of American cotton exports to China as a target, which will hurt American farmers and US textile manufacturers, and add costs to our supply chains".

Mr Trump outraged Canadian, Mexican and European leaders last month by imposing punishing tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum to protect American producers from allegedly unfair competition.

It is not only China that will face the measures.

Beijing also has announced plans to cut import duties on autos and some consumer goods and to ease limits on foreign ownership in auto manufacturing, insurance and some other industries, though those don't directly address USA complaints.

"Technology and innovation are America's greatest economic assets and President Trump rightfully recognizes that if we want our country to have a prosperous future, we must take a stand now to uphold fair trade and protect American competitiveness". After a meeting in Washington, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin declared the trade war "on hold" and the tariffs suspended. Trump has already said the United States would hit another $100 billion of Chinese imports if Beijing retaliated.

Stock markets dropped in Europe and the USA after the announcement with investors concerned about a possible trade war. The US imported $505 billion of goods from China a year ago and exported about $130 billion, leaving a 2017 deficit of $376 billion, according to government figures.
