World Cup Curse Hits Defending Champion Germany

The German game against South Korea was among the most dramatic in World Cup history as Young-Gwon Kim scored a controversial goal that had to be judged by VAR before it was allowed. This is the first time since 1954 that Germany is going out before the knockout stages.

Andreas Granqvist converted the 18th successful penalty of the 2018 World Cup, when he put Sweden 2-0 up against Mexico.

With Germany out, Brazil coach Tite was confident his team could cope with being the new favourites. They were still in position to advance despite trailing Sweden, but they were waiting - some with tears in their eyes - for Germany to do the inevitable and ruin their chances of moving on.

The 2014 world champions are out of the World Cup in Russian Federation.

But despite peppering the Korean goals with shots, the Germans conceded two and, after Sweden won 3-0, Joachim Löw's side were sent home from Russian Federation earlier than expected.

The South Koreans, who had no idea of the score in the other match, rejoiced as if having won the tournament, while 11 German players hoped the ground would swallow them.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned following a video review.

"We believed until the end even with the 0-1 (deficit) we tried to turn it but we could not score", said Hummels, after Germany became the tournament's third champions in succession to go out at the group stage. "We need to draw the right conclusions".

Germany ended up last in a group it expected to win.

Mexico celebrated South Korea's unlikely victory, hoisting their fans in the air, and anointing them as their brothers.

"We did not deserve to be winning the title once again", Loew said. The team, littered with stars such as Toni Kroos and Mesut Ozil, began by losing to Mexico 1-0 in their first game and only followed that up with a late victor against Sweden in their second.

The result comes eight years to the day since Germany knocked England out of the 2010 World Cup by beating them 4-1 in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

"It's too soon for me to answer, it will take a few hours to see things clearly, the disappointment is very deep in me", the 58-year said when asked if he would resign.
