The 25-year-old midfielder's future was reportedly uncertain following Arsene Wenger's exit but the Gunners' new head coach has indicated Xhaka will take a central role.

'I'm delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us, Emery told the club's official website. "I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season".

Arsenal confirmed on Friday that Xhaka had agreed a new deal, subject to the usual regulatory process, two years on from signing for the club from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The statement did not reveal the length or terms of the extension.

"I've known Granit now for more than six or seven years, so he's just an awesome player", Lichtsteiner told Arsenal Player.

Xhaka was playing as a central midfielder for the gunners last season and featured for the club in all 38 Premier League matches since the manager Arsene Wenger trusted the Swiss worldwide so much.

But new head coach Unai Emery made it clear he plans to use the Switzerland worldwide next season.

Swiss defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has arrived on a free from Juventus, while a potential £27million deal for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira, who was a late substitute as Uruguay opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Egypt, is understood to be in the pipeline.

Arsenal have not disclosed how long the contract is, but it is expected to last four or five years.
