Nawaz Sharif Accuses Pakistan Army Of'Attempting To Rig Elections

Pakistani police detained hundreds of members of the former ruling party in the central city of Lahore on Thursday, weeks before the country heads to the polls, party officials said.

"Those putting me on the Exit Control List should know that I am coming back, there are those who said that I will not be coming back to Pakistan, some said I will be taking political asylum but all of them were wrong, I and Maryam are coming back".

Speaking to media persons outside London's Harley Street Clinic, Hussain said that his mother opened her eyes for a few seconds only to close them again; however, she is in a better state now and doctors have adjusted the settings on the ventilator. Both father-daughter duo will be returning to Pakistan on Friday. He asked who was behind his expulsion from the Prime Minister House, who had gotten a verdict of their choice against him, who had elected [Sadiq] Sanjrani as Senate chairman and imposed their will on the people of Pakistan in the election.

Sharif, who is in London to tend to his ailing wife Kulsoom, is expected to return to Pakistan on Friday, days after being sentenced to 11 years in prison by an anti-corruption court in the Avenfield properties case, one of the three corruption cases against him following the Panama Papers scandal.

Besides arrests, the Lahore administration has also seized several containers and placed them on the main arteries of the city to discourage the PML-N workers from reaching the airport where Nawaz and Maryam would likely land at around 5.15pm in the evening, a week after their conviction.

Shehbaz Sharif and other senior leaders of the PML-N were visibly angry over the police crackdown on their party workers during a press conference held in Lahore on Thursday afternoon. If the flight carrying the PML-N leaders is not diverted to the federal capital, they will be taken to Islamabad via helicopter directly from the airport.

"Nawaz really believes this is about democracy and his legacy", Musadik Malik, Sharif ally and former PML-N cabinet minister, told Reuters.

According to Lahore's City Traffic Officer, the plan will be executed before the rally of the PML-N, while more than 200 wardens will be deputed to maintain the flow of the traffic.

"No logic can defend the 30-day detention of our workers", Shehbaz upheld. As per ANI, the PML (N) president said, "We thought Bangladesh is a baggage and it slipped off our hands". He has urged upon all party workers to join the rally.

Sharif has also said the military's intelligence wing, the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, is intimidating his party's candidates to switch loyalties, or to run as independents, ahead of the July 25 poll.

"The caretaker setup is a salaried puppet", he said.

Commenting on the Avenfield case judgement, Sharif said that it was written in the verdict that he had been absolved of corruption charges.

Sharif said that former dictator Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who abrogated the constitution of Pakistan twice, remains at large and no one has the power to bring him back.
