Amlo win to usher in new era in Mexico

The morning after his crushing election victory, Mexico's president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador thanked President Donald Trump for his congratulation message and said he'll contact the USA leader to "reach an understanding".

"In the case of Mexico, obviously we share a border with them (and) this president has made very clear about building that wall and having Mexico pay for it", Kellyanne Conway said on Fox News.

Lopez Obrador also spoke of support for migrants and said the most forgotten and humble people of Mexico will be given preference in his government.

Tensions with the United States over migration, border security and talks to revise a free trade deal have loomed over the election, prompting all Mexican presidential candidates to promise to defend the country against Trump's threats.

Lopez Obrador has pledged to not let Mexico become a "pinata" battered by the United States and rejects Trump's plan for a border wall.

Donald Trump said he believes he will have a good relationship with the new Mexican President.

An exit poll by Parmetira had Lopez Obrador winning with between 53 to 59 percent of the vote, far ahead of his two main rivals.

An official "quick count" of results is expected at midnight EDT (2pm AEST), with a margin of error of 0.5 per cent.

Merkel & Seehofer defuse tensions over immigration policy
That scenario scared all parties except the anti-immigration AfD which, polls suggest, could hope for further gains. Soon after Monday's deal was announced, Austria warned Tuesday it could "take measures to protect" its borders.

Rivals Ricardo Anaya and Jose Antonio Meade acknowledged Lopez Obrador's win even before official results were announced, in a break from past elections. His election marks the first leftist presidential win in 30 years for Mexico. The central state of Guanajuato was predicted to go to a candidate of the conservative National Action Party.

Much remains to be determined about how Lopez Obrador's often nebulous campaign proposals will manifest themselves in government.

Trump tweeted Sunday that "I look very much forward to working with him". He said contracts obtained under energy reforms passed under President Enrique Pena Nieto will be scrutinized for any corruption or illegality, but otherwise contracts will be honored.

Mexicans were voting Sunday in a potentially transformative election that could put in power a firebrand vowing to end politics and business as usual, in a country tired of spiraling violence and scandal-plagued politicians.

"They shouldn't dare commit a fraud, because if they do they will meet the devil", said Yeidckol Polevnsky, president of Lopez Obrador's Morena party.

"The fundamental problem is that this country has a huge demand for drugs", she said.

"Peace and tranquility are the fruits of justice", Lopez Obrador said. They said they are concerned about problems ranging from crime to corruption in their country. Anaya tried to harness the youth vote with an emphasis on technology and new ideas, but he divided his own conservative party to take its candidacy and it's unclear if his new allies in the leftist Democratic Revolution Party will actually turn out for someone from the other end of the ideological spectrum.

Josefina Serrano, 44, who rode eight hours from Sacramento on a bus organized for voters, said she voted for Lopez Obrador because she was exhausted of corruption and violence in Mexico, as well an anti-Mexican attitude in the United States.
