Brexit Central: Government 'lying to MPs' over Brexit deal

In an interview published just hours before he was due to have lunch with May and tea with Queen Elizabeth on Friday, Trump chided the "very unfortunate" results of the prime minister's Brexit negotiation.

Speaking on ITV's Good Morning Britain today, Ms Thornberry said it is "extraordinarily rude of Donald Trump to behave like this".

The comments come ahead of his controversial four-day visit to Britain.

It would see Britain follow European Union rules on goods to protect cross-border trade and avoid checks on the Irish frontier, while enabling it to control migration and sign new non-EU trade deals, including in services.

That matters because the government has been clinging to the idea of trade deals with countries outside the European Union as one of the benefits of Brexit, and claiming that the choice in the Chequers deal to stay close to the European Union doesn't exclude those opportunities.

"It's typical, but honestly Donald Trump's legacy will outlive any big orange balloon and the matters that will be discussed at Chequers and now in Brussels are much more important and will have a much longer effect than any day rally", she said.

Trump also said the deal that May's government has proposed would "probably kill" any trade agreement with the US because Washington "would be dealing with the European Union" instead of with the United Kingdom.

President Trump is also scheduled to meet with May Friday for a British military parade, before visiting her country house for bilateral talks.

"I would have done it much differently".

Ex-Knicks star Charles Oakley arrested at Las Vegas casino
Former NBA star Charles Oakley has been arrested in Las Vegas for attempting to cheat while gambling, US reports said Thursday. Oakley was arrested on three counts of assault for his fight with the security guards and another for criminal trespassing.

"I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me", Trump said.

Shortly after he told North Atlantic Treaty Organisation he didn't think the Brexit deal Mrs May was offering was the one people wanted, he continued to lay into the British prime minister, even backing her former foreign secretary Boris Johnson to be a successor.

While he stressed he did not want to get involved in the UK's internal affairs, he added: "The people voted to break it up so I would imagine that's what they would do, but maybe they're taking a different route".

"I was very saddened to see he was leaving government and I hope he goes back in at some point", Trump said. I know they have had a lot of resignations. "I think they like me a lot in the UK". I think he is a great representative for your country.

Rarely has a foreign leader been so mocked on an official visit - London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, a Muslim who has challenged Trump's worldview OK'd the balloon, which is an apt symbol of Trump's tempestuous relationship with Britain, traditionally the United States' closest ally.

"I would say Brexit is Brexit", he told reporters. We must deal with the causes but also enforcement and where we have lost £7m in our budget in London I have invested £4m. I haven't been there in a long time.

A large police presence has been building up outside the palace in Oxfordshire and BBC News correspondent Duncan Kennedy said about 500-600 protesters bearing placards were demonstrating before Mr Trump's arrival.

As well as in London, protests are expected to take place in Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds, Cambridge and Cardiff after Trump arrives here on Thursday. Look at what is going on in London.

He added that Mr Khan had shown a "lack of respect" for the American government by attacking him.
