A Heathrow Airport spokesperson said the alarm "impacted operation of the airfield for a short while".

The airline apologised to passengers for yesterday's "systems issue", which lead to a backlog for passengers and a number of cancellations.

Flights had to be diverted at Gatwick Airport after a plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

Fire crews are surrounding the plane on the runway and many incoming flights to Gatwick were diverted.

Passengers at the airport on Wednesday described chaotic scenes as people tried to catch flights and complained there was a lack of information from the airline.

Flight BA2605 from Naples in Italy had to perform the emergency landing due to a hydraulic fluid leak, as reported in the national press today (Friday, July 20).

A Gatwick Airport spokesman said: 'We only had two diverts from Heathrow Airport as a result of the earlier action - one from Glasgow at 5pm and the other was from St Petersburgh at 5.10pm'.

Cllr Simon Dudley, leader of the Royal Borough, said: "We have repeated our concerns to Government about how a third runway at Heathrow would affect the daily lives of our residents and the millions who live in the airport's shadow".
